I own many of Chucks painting.
The most respectful way I have found to express gratitude for a great living artist, who is still affordable, is to purchase the work. Anyone can pay the big hammer price after our visionaries have departed this earth. The real magic in collecting art however is having the pleasure of looking into the artists eyes and knowing that he will be looking back at you everyday through the work. Chuck-we absolutely love your work and we are better for knowing you. Love Stuart, Rosalva and Sebastian Tomc

Karen, I am thinking that at least in my experience both happen, separately and simultaneously but as something that attends the investigation rather than is the subject of the investigation. Focus on the work yields both, at least for me.

Karen, you pose an interesting and important question. (I have a tendecy to be overly negative when I address certain issues so I'll refrain from that.) To answer your question I think it is both to understand and to be understood. For me, I paint to be understood and I look at other paintings to understand.

Great interview, I also loved Chuck's comment Norbert quoted above. Do you think an artist paints to understand or to be understood? Just curious, something I've been thinking about lately.

"How a person portrays the nude reveals a lot about their psyche. Actually, how a person portrays human beings period tells you a lot about where they are coming from. Or how much they feel for their subject."

Very true.

Great to hear about you again! I remember when you were a big hit in the 80s (well, as far as that goes in Chiacago). I always enjoyed your work. I had just googled you recently in fact, wanted to show your work to some young artists. Good luck. Great answers. Come to Wesley Kimler's on Thursday October 16th from 7:30 - 11:00 pm. I'd love to meet you face to face after seeing your paintings for years. And most of all, hang in there! I love the work!

If you ever write a book on your experiences with the art world, I want to be first in line to buy it. Very inspirational interview!

Great interview. I've been visiting Chuck's studio for 15 years. He's the Real Deal.

So refreshing to read an interview with a Chicago artist who doesn't bitch and whine about being stuck in the hinterlands, who just does his work because he has no other choice...I spent a couple happy hours in Chuck's studio some years back, looking at his sketchbooks and showing him mine; it left a feeling that I wasn't quite as insane as it sometimes seams, to follow the path that I did...Thanks for posting this, Norbert!

I love this interview of one of my favorite living painters. The dead souls that contribute to our difficult stories can't touch us...and for proof just look at a few of Chuck's paintings. Thank you Chuck and NA.
