“One Question” with Michael K. Corbin

Michael K. Corbin is an avid art collector, writer, full-time broadcast journalist, yogi and runner. A New York City native, he travels far and wide for art’s sake. He writes for various art websites that include www.absolutearts.com and of course, www.artbookguy.com.
Neoteric Art: How did you get into collecting art?
Michael K. Corbin: I think that I’ve always been an art collector. From the time I was a kid growing up in New York City, I recall going on field trips to MOMA, the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan and seeing all of these great masterpieces that I loved. However, it never occurred to me that I could actually become a collector until several years ago. This was around the time when art really began to show up on the internet. From my very first purchase, I’ve been hooked. Now I have about 300 pieces—all emerging artists—in my collection. I always buy directly from artists with whom I become friends. Otherwise, I may as well be buying towels from Target. My ultimate goal is to create a travelling exhibition that can go around the world. I want to show people that you don’t have to be wealthy or even “well to do” to become a serious collector. It’s difficult, because like many people, I can’t afford a lot, but it can be done. Most importantly, it’s a blast!

Sounds great. I’ve always suggested to art-unaware friends “that you don’t have to be wealthy or even “well to do” to become a serious collector.” Now, I’m hoping this book will help break down the fear factor.

A good representative of the one group in the artworld that we definitely need more of.
