What’s interesting to me about the work here is that the artist uses a traditionally female domestic art form like cross-stitching or embroidery, to inform her work about male violence.

A contrast could be made between the feminist challenge to the way art history has viewed certain processes, and the depiction of masculinity seeking its own identity in a mostly corporate – money influences everything- world.
The idea to use notation or sheet music as a way to re-interpret terrorism – combining language with craft – is fascinating.

Although I haven’t seen her show, Noelle Mason’s embroidery seems to expose the rupture of sentimentality from time, the moment when the peaceful, comforting pace of needlework was replaced by the slow-motion loop of the Columbine cafeteria security camera. Decorated pillows have been replaced by a global momento mori that we have been forced to stitch into our own lives and family histories.

I can’t say to what end Mason has jarred our sensibilities by elevating embroidery to a fine art while despoiling it with the bloodless pixels of Columbine. From the description of the exhibit, it seems her confrontation of a public/private nightmare deserves recognition.
